Woman arrested over May 9 attack on SP

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested another suspect over the attack on a Superintendent of Police (SP) at Panchikawatta during the tense situation on May 9, on Monday (22).

She is a 28-year-old resident of Maligawatta, Police said. The CID had arrested her husband also in connection with this incident on a previous occasion. A group of angry individuals attacked a DIG and this SP on May 9 evening and set their vehicles on fire at Panchikawatta. The arrested woman also had attacked the police officers and robbed some gold jewellery that were in the possession of the SP, police said.

The police officer was on the way to Colombo for special duty from Negombo when he met with this unexpected attack by area residents, police said. According to the police, his official pistol was also stolen by the attackers. The CID has arrested five suspects in connection with this attack and more suspects are due to be arrested, police said.
