The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the release on bail of Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was arrested and remanded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake issued this order after a lengthy consideration of the facts.
Accordingly, the suspect was ordered to be released on two surety bonds of Rs. 50 million each.
The court, which banned the suspect from traveling abroad, also ordered that the Controller of Immigration and Emigration be informed of this.
Accordingly, the Magistrate, who ordered the suspect to report to the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division on the last Sunday of every month, also ordered him to refrain from influencing witnesses.
The Magistrate, while announcing his decision, ordered that the suspect be released on bail in accordance with the provisions of the Bail Act, as the prosecution has failed to present sufficient and satisfactory evidence to warrant further remand.
