Youth electrocuted while installing street light for businessman

The Mundalama Police said that a young electrician who was installing a street light by obtaining electricity from a power line, at the request of a businessman in the Mundalama Kirimattawa area, died of electrocution on the evening of November 22.

The deceased was identified as Thurai Raj Madhushan Raur, an unmarried 26-year-old resident of Mundalama 60 Acre village, the younger of two children.

Preliminary Police investigations have revealed that while this young man had been on his way home from work, the businessman had asked him to install a light on an electric post in front of the businessman’s house and the youth was electrocuted while doing so.

It is stated that the young man was electrocuted due to carelessness while he was installing the lamp on the pole and was connecting its wires to the high voltage power lines. The businessman had put the young man in his car and had taken him to the Mundalama Regional Hospital, but he was already dead, according to the hospital authorities.

It has been alleged that this businessman had not informed the Keeryankalliya Divisional Electricity Maintenance Unit or even the Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha about installing this light and this young electrician had been used to illegally install the light on an electric post located on the road.

The mother and relatives of the deceased have alleged that the young man had been avoiding this work for several days and said that he could not do this job. However, after that he had received about 15 phone calls asking him to do it and they said that he finally went to do this job due to the persistent calls.
