Youth, his friends held for rape of minor girl

Mawathagama Police have arrested a man who sold his 15-year-old girlfriend to his friends to get money to buy drugs. Seven of his friends who raped the minor girl were also arrested yesterday (15).

This minor is a resident of Nikaweratiya. Her mother abandoned the family when she was young and therefore she was under the care of her grandmother who resides in Mundalama.

Police said that she was once caught by the police while running away from her grandmother’s care and was brought to court and placed on probation. She ran away from probation also about two months ago.

After finding her, the Mundalama Police referred her to a judicial medical officer to whom she revealed about the rape. When the police interrogated her about it, she said that she had an affair with a 23-year-old youth, a resident of Pilassa in the Mawathagama Police Division. She said that she was first raped by him and then he sold her to his friends.

Police said that she was raped between October 22 and November 9. The investigation has revealed that the youth’s mother is abroad and he lived with her brother in a rented house. The girl was raped in that house.

Police said that the minor met her boyfriend at the Kurunegala bus stand few months ago. The minor ran away from the probation home and lived in her boyfriend’s rented house. The police said that during this time she was raped by her boyfriend and the boyfriend sold her to his friends to get money to buy drugs. The investigation revealed that he had sold her to his friends for an amount between Rs. 2,500 and Rs. 5,000.
