Zahira and Joes begin on winning note

Zahira College, Colombo and St. Joseph’s College, Colombo won their curtain raiser matches, recording wins against Baduriya Central College, Mawanella and Hameed Al Husseinie College, Colombo respectively in the under 20, division 1 all Island football Championship tournament 2023, sponsored by Sri Lankan Sports TV, organised and conducted by the Sri-Lanka Schools Football Association, played at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo on the 15 of August 2023.

In the first match of the curtain raiser, Zahira College, Colombo registered a 1 nil win against Baduriya Central College, Mawanella.. Zahira College, Colombo went ahead in the the 12th minute of the 1st half with M.H.M. Akeen getting a keen pass, had only to tap the ball to the goal to give Zahirians a 1 nil lead at half time. Zahira College, Colombo dominating the second half, missed opportunities of scoring more goals, saw Zahira College, Colombo winning the game by a solitary goal to nil.. Baduriya Central College, Mawanella also missing few opportunities, played the game to much expectations.

In the second match of the curtain raiser, St Joseph’s College, Colombo registered a 2/1 win against Hameed Al Husseinie College, Colombo. Hameed Al Husseinie went ahead of the game in the 15th minute of the 1st half with the goal coming from the boot of M.S. Mohamed to give them a 1 nil lead at half time. St. Joseph’s College, Colombo displaying their talents and skills in the second half, D. Karunaratne got the equaliser in the 30th minute. Both teams playing an attacking game, St Joseph’s, T.D. Wishmitha getting an opportunity in the 35th minute, took the advantage of scoring the second goal for St. Joseph’s, to give last years defending Champions a 2/1 win.
