10th National Scouts Jamboree in Trinco from February 20 to 26

The 10th National Scouts Jamboree will be held in Trincomalee from February 20 to 26 with the participation of nearly 20,000 boys, girls and leaders, said the Chief Scouts Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Scouts Association, lawyer Janaprith Fernando.

He said that the inauguration ceremony of the Jamboree, which is being held under the theme of “Leadership for Change”, will be held on the 21st under the patronage of Chief Scout of Sri Lanka, President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Chief Commissioner announced this, during a media briefing held yesterday (14) at the Government News Department. He also said that about 500 scouts, both boys and girls and leaders representing a number of countries will join the national jamboree and for the first time in the history of the jamboree, Girl Guides (Scouts) will also set up camp.

Janaprith Fernando said that about 12,000 scouts representing 37 scout districts will be camping out for 7 days, approximately 8,000 cub scouts will join the camps for three days.

He mentioned that they are attempting through the jamboree to transform boy scouts and girl guides who participate in the camp into different persons when they leave the camp. He said further that the camp will be open to the public from 21 February, after 2.00 pm and every day after that from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

He also stated that this jamboree will be implemented through sub-camps and there will be various types of activities such as bon fire displays, cultural performances etc., which will be held every day.

The Chief Scouts Commissioner said that assistance is being received from Education Minister Susil Premajayanth, officials of the Ministry of Education led by its secretary, Governor of the East Senthil Thondaman and his staff as well as all government institutions. He also stated that contributions are being made by a leading State bank and a number of private organizations.

Janaprith Fernando who said that the scout’s movement is one that has been joined by the most number of children in the world, mentioned that 57 million children from 174 countries have joined.

He also said that the Sri Lanka Scouts Association is the only Scouts Association in Sri Lanka recognized by the World Scouts Movement.

Deputy Chief Commissioner M.F.M. Muheed, Programme Commissioner Sarath Mataraarachchi, National Training Commissioner, Colonel Padmalal Perera were present on this occasion as camp organizing commissioners.
