Secretary to the Urban Development and Housing Ministry W.S. Sathyananda said that 13 urgent proposals required to overcome the current setback in the construction industry were handed over to the President.

Accordingly, this year’s Budget will introduce necessary policies including these proposals needed to promote the construction industry. About 20 percent of the country’s population depends on the construction industry. Therefore, the Secretary emphasized that if the construction industry collapses, the lives of one-fifth of the total population of the country will be affected.

The Secretary further said that the President and the Government is currently doing the necessary work to uplift the construction industry and is currently engaged in providing the financial and non-financial solutions needed to uplift the industry.

The Ministry Secretary said this while joining the Kalutara District Consultative Service mobile programme for resolving problems of small- and medium-scale contractors in the industry. The programme was held at the District Secretariat, Dodangoda, Kalutara.

“The President appointed six main committees headed by Ministry Secretaries to look into the problems pertaining to the construction industry in the recent past. These committees met several times and discussed possible remedies for these problems. Accordingly, we were able to identify 50 proposals that can be taken to uplift the construction industry in the country. Of these, 13 proposals were brought to the attention of the President as matters to be fulfilled immediately. Therefore, we hope that the necessary priorities will be introduced to turn the construction industry in a new direction through the Budget 2024,” he said.
