It has been revealed in a survey conducted by the Central Province Education Ministry that the literacy of the children studying in the fourth and fifth year classes in Central Province schools is at 3 percent of the total number of students.

Central Provincial Education Secretary Menaka Herath said that the reason for this situation is the inability to provide practical knowledge, including teaching letters, to children enrolled in the first year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Education Secretary said that this survey was conducted by selecting groups of students as a sample at the school level.

He also emphasised that programmes have been planned to raise the literacy levels of these children. He said that not only in the primary sector, the literacy levels of children from 6 to 11 years will also be measured and programmes will be implemented to identify children with low literacy and increase their literacy. Herath also said that the support of retired teachers will be taken for this programme which is supported by the World Bank.
