Police Central Anti-Corruption Task Force based in Walana, Panadura says that an employee of the record room of the Motor Traffic Department (MTD) has been identified for vehicle fraud. The suspect illegally earned millions of rupees by changing the data and entering the names of other persons of the registered vehicles in the computer system of the Motor Traffic Department.

Police said investigations revealed that about 250 telephone calls were exchanged between the main suspect and the officer at the Motor Traffic Department.

Police investigations revealed that the jeep worth around Rs.20 million that was used by the suspect had also been registered fraudulently. Police took the vehicle into custody.

He is the mastermind of an organized gang that has been engaged in a large-scale racket of forging documents for assembled vehicles.

Police believe that about 400 assembled vehicles were registered in the Motor Traffic Department fraudulently.

Letterheads, rubber stamps, a stock of forged documents related to the Motor Traffic Department, forged registration certificates belonging to public and private institutions, revenue licences, fake documents certifying the sale of condemned vehicles, a large number of letterheads of public and private institutions, a large number of copies of complaints about lost vehicles issued by Police stations, a large number of blank forms of Common 172 type of the Government, forged rubber seals belonging to insurance companies and motor vehicle inspectors were arrested from the suspect’s house.

Police say that they will investigate further to find out whether other personnel of the Motor Traffic Department are involved in this racket.

Central Anti-Corruption Task Force, Walana, Panadura is conducting investigations.
