A total of 690 nomination lists from recognized political parties and independent groups have been accepted from all districts to contest the 2024 General Election for all 22 districts while 74 nomination lists have been rejected by the Election Commission, Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said. The Commissioner General said that those groups that have been rejected can go to Court if they feel there has been any injustice meted out to them.
The acceptance of nominations from recognized political parties and independent groups to contest the 2024 Parliamentary Election was concluded at 12 noon yesterday (11), the Election Commission announced.
Time was given to file any objections until 1.30 pm after the conclusion of accepting nominations by the Election Commission.
The largest number of political groups consisting of 64 will be contesting for the Digamadulla District. Also, the least number of teams will compete for Monaragala and Polonnaruwa electoral districts with 15 teams in each of the two districts.The Elections Commissioner said that preference numbers for those contesting the General Election will be given in the near future.
Meanwhile, the name of actress Damitha Abeyratne who was expected to contest representing Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) from the Ratnapura District was not among the list of candidates nominated that was submitted by the SJB yesterday.
Furthermore, nominations of YouTuber Ashen Senarathna and his independent group have been rejected by the Election Commission due to nomination papers not being submitted by a recognized individual. The Election Commission reiterated that the Election Act specifies which individuals are authorized to handover nominations and failure to comply accordingly results in disqualification.
The Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said that according to the Election Expenses Regulation Act, the maximum amount of money to be spent by each candidate in relation to the 2024 General Election will be announced in the near future.
A special security arrangement was deployed by the Police in all the District Secretariats around the country and around the Election Commission office at Sarana Mawatha, Rajagiriya during the nomination submission period yesterday.
A total of 349 independent groups had deposited security bonds to contest this year’s General Election as of Thursday (10). A total of 147 recognized political parties and 94 independent groups have submitted their nominations as of Thursday.
The General Election will be held on November 14, 2024 to elect 225 members for the next Parliament.
