Defence State Minister Pramitha Bandara Thennakoon said in Parliament on Wednesday that 71 houses have been totally damaged due to recent inclement weather conditions and 9,177 houses have been partially damaged.
The State Minister said this while replying to an oral question addressed to the Prime Minister by MP Akila Ellawala regarding the provision of compensation due to the ongoing disaster situation.
The State Minister also said: “As of today, 71 houses totally damaged and 9,177 houses partly damaged, 821 medium-scale businesses and 63 infrastructures have been damaged due to the recent disaster situation and most of the houses built near the mountains have not received proper approval. These houses fall under the category of unauthorised construction.”
The State Minister also said that special consideration will be given to these unauthorised constructions while giving concessions in the future.
The State Minister also said that 30 deaths have been reported due to the disaster. He said that a compensation amount of Rs 25,000 has been given to the families of those who lost their lives and it is expected that more compensation will be given.
He said that the total amount of compensation to be paid is still being calculated, so the amount cannot be said yet.
The State Minister said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had submitted a special Cabinet Paper in this regard last Monday and accordingly he had given instructions to obtain additional financial allocations from the Treasury and accordingly the amount given daily for food in the current cycle has been increased by 33 percent.
He said that the system of providing food to the people affected by the disaster was changed, and although food was given only to the people in the disaster centres, the people who were trapped in the upper floors of the houses were given food to the same places.
