75% of SLPP MPs with President- MP Milan Jayathilaka
At a press conference held in Colombo on Thursday, SLPP MP Milan Jayathilaka said that over 75% of SLPP MPs are with the President.
“We have taken this decision on behalf of the country and he is the only candidate who is capable of steering the country through numerous challenges. We are assisting the President to navigate the country out of this economic quagmire, but we have always remained loyal to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna”, he said.
He added that the SLPP’s Constitution explicitly states that the Party places great importance on the advancement of the Nation. Our endorsement of the President’s candidacy is rooted in this principle.
He emphasised that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is their leader and role model.
“President Mahinda Rajapaksa saved the country from the scourge of terrorism and brought peace to the country. He is our leader”.
Jayathilaka insisted that they took this decision on behalf of the country and they have been left no option other than taking this decision, if actions are taken against them for defending the country at this juncture.
“In the event that we face consequences for advocating for the advancement and welfare of the country and the people, we are ready to make a choice”, he said.
“President Ranil Wickremesinghe assumed office amidst an unprecedented economic crisis, demonstrating his ability to steer the country towards development during the past two years”.
He said that President Wickremesinghe ended the era when MPs were killed on the road and their properties vandalised by mobs.
“We underwent an era during which MPs could not go to their electorates and meet their people. The President brought this era to an end,” he said.
Jayathilaka said the situation in the Middle East is deteriorating, following the assassination of the Hamas Leader in Tehran, and this situation will affect Sri Lanka negatively.
“Fuel is being imported from Middle Eastern countries, while thousands of our expatriate workers are employed in these countries”, he said. He was of the view that the country should have a strong leadership to steer the economy of the country amidst these challenges.
