Girl’s hand amputated due to Nurse’s fault

0 11

Last Wednesday a tense situation prevailed in the Jaffna Teaching Hospital after it was revealed that the hand of an eight-year-old schoolgirl who went to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital to get treatment for fever was amputated due to the fault of a nurse working in the relevant ward.

The relatives of the girl and group of members from several voluntary organizations requested the hospital  authorities to release the report of the fact finding committee in this regard.

It is reported that the girl’s hand had to be amputated due to the wrong action of the nurse and her giving a wrong injection.

But the recommendations of the two-member committee report appointed by the Northern Provincial Health Services Director were not revealed.

This led to a tense situation at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital with relatives of the girl and members of the volunteer groups acting aggressively.

Representatives of Jaffna’s voluntary organizations claimed that the nurse had given wrong medicines and injections to the patients in the past as well and that she was a nurse who had received many complaints regarding treating the patients inhumanely and without any concern.

In the meantime, the representatives of those organizations also said the Director of Northern Province Health Services has made it a habit of appointing committees for investigations every time there is a disputed case but do not release the reports to save the personnel of the medical field.
