Hockey is to hit the top again in Kandy, the present promoters and the Kandy District Hockey Association headed by R.Maheswaran and his able committee.
They are all out to bring back hockey to its former glory. Kandy, the hill country capital, is where hockey was first played, and has a proud record of producing some of the top national hockey players and captains both men and women. Hockey, which is a popular sport in Kandy among boys and, girl’s schools,men and women at club level.
The game can reach great heights if they have ground to play matches, today in cricket,rugby, football hockey the ground rates are sky high. Hockey in Kandy dates as far back as 1907when the Indian Rajput Regiment, one of the oldest infantry regiments of the Indian Army occupied the Kandy Military Barracks, currently known as the Police Grounds. The first hockey encounter in Kandy was played in 1907 at the Bogambara Grounds when Kandy SC and the Industrial Schools team met.
Trinity does well in cricket
Kandy’s cricket lovers are happy for the superb performance of the Trinity College cricket side in the under 19 inter schools limited over’s Division I tournament Tier “A”. The Trinity College cricketers in six games have won five first round fixtures of the Under 19 Limited over’s inter schools cricket tournament. The first game ended in no decision against St. Benedict’s College due to rain, won the second game beating Prince of Wales College, in the third game beat Maliyadeva College and in the fourth game were able to beat Maris Stella College in the fifth game beat St. Thomas College Matale and in the last outing were able to beat De Mazenod College the next game is against St Joseph’s College in Colombo, followed by games against DS Senanayake College eon 06th October at (Asgiriya) and against Royal College on 10th October at (Asgiriya)
