Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said in Parliament yesterday (05) that although medical faculties were established in the past according to the opinions of various politicians, medical faculties cannot be established as per the needs of individuals.
The Minister said that to solve the problems related to the Faculty of Medicine of the Wayamba University, the relevant officials and people will be called to Parliament or the University Grants Commission. Minister Premajayantha said this while replying to the question asked by Kurunegala District MP Gunapala Rathnasekara, expecting oral answers.
The Minister also said that medical education in this country should be increased and it should be established with the necessary infrastructure and human resources.
Minister Premajayantha stated that the Faculty of Medicine of Wayamba University is established in Kuliyapitiya and the General Hospital is located in Kurunegala and the distance between the two is more than 25 kilometres.
He said that from the Medical Faculty of the University of Colombo, one can walk to the General Hospital and when starting medical faculties, decisions should be made taking this factor into account.
The Minister stated that the Kuliyapitiya Hospital should be converted into a teaching hospital to solve the problem of Wayamba University.
