The Illegal Assets Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Police has issued freezing orders on cash and property worth approximately Rs. 85 million, suspected to have been acquired through drug trafficking.
According to police, the assets include a two-story house valued at more than Rs. 70 million in Jaffna, and Rs. 15 million in cash.
The investigation stems from the arrest of five suspects by Special Task Force (STF) officers in Jaffna on August 31, 2023, after they were found in possession of Rs. 15 million in cash. A lorry was also seized during the operation.
Further investigations revealed that one of the suspects, a 32-year-old resident of Mathagal, had allegedly used proceeds from drug trafficking to construct the two-story house.
Police said the Rs. 15 million seized during the initial arrests remains in the custody of the Jaffna court.
Accordingly, the Illegal Assets Investigation Division issued freezing orders on the house and cash under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, effective October 15, 2026, for a period of 14 days.
Further investigations are underway. (Newswire)
