Minister wants STF to be kept at Expressways till proper plan is devised

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana yesterday made a request from Public Security Minister Tiran Alles to give time to withdraw the STF from expressways, until a plan is devised to employ proper security for them.

The minister said this in response to a question by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa regarding the defence budget under Standing Orders 27/2.

The Minister of Public Security had sent a letter to the Secretary of the Ministry of Highways to remove the STF officers engage in.The minister also said that he accepts that it is not a duty of the STF officers.

Deploying STF officers is not new and since 2011, these officers engaged in expressway duties along with others officers of the Fire Brigade and the Police.

Stressing the importance of ensuring the safety of the people who use expressways and other properties, the Minister said that it takes sometime to deploy officials for the security of the expressways.
