Bimandee Bandara of Hillwood College Kandy and Supuna Warusawithana of 99 Technologies emerged as the women’s and men’s open champions at the 77th National Table Tennis Championship concluded at the Kandy Municipal Council Indoor Stadium yesterday.
It was Bimandee’s fourth National title, securing an easy 4-1 win over Thamadi Kavindya of Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda, showcasing her continuous performance. Bimandee won the first three sets 15/13, 11/8, and 11/7, but Thamadi won the fourth set 12/10. However, Bimandee fought back strongly, winning the final set 11/1 to comfortably clinch the title.
In the men’s singles, a fierce battle unfolded between Prasad de Silva of Emjay International Pvt Ltd and Supuna Warusawithana. Supuna, the old Dharmasokian, fought back to beat top seed Prasad with a 4-2 set victory, with a close battle until the last set.
Supuna won the first set 11/6, but Prasad former Vidyartha College paddler equalized by winning the second set 11/5. Supuna played with confidence to secure the third and fourth sets 11/7, 11/9, gaining a 3-1 lead.
The fifth set was closely contested, with Prasad finally winning 14/12. However, in the sixth and deciding set, Supuna beat Prasad 11/5 to win the National crown for the first time in his career.
Hansani Kalugeekiyana and Nimesh Ranchagoda of Sri Lanka Navy won the mixed doubles title, defeating Nuwantha Niroshana of Unichela and Kasuni Patiala of Sri Lanka Army 13/11, 11/13, 11/6, 4/11, and 11/4.
Open Women’s Doubles was won by Tamadi Kavindya and Sinethmi Thesanya of Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda, defeating Bimandee Bandara of Hillwood College, Kandy, and Buddheepani Rajaguru. In the Men’s Doubles, Nirmala Jayasinghe (MAS) and Dinesh Kavishka of Vidyartha OBA – Kandy defeated Chameera Ginige (University of Sri Jayawardhenapura) and Nuwantha Niroshana (Sabaragamuwa University) in three sets.
Meanwhile, the Men’s Consolation event was won by Chinthaka Ekanayake (Vidyartha OBA – Kandy), who defeated Oshada Upekshana (Vidyartha College – Kandy), while the Women’s Consolation event was won by Kavindhya Sheshadi (Sabaragamuwa University), defeating Iyuni Wickramasinghe of Holy Cross College – Gampaha.
The tournament, conducted by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL), saw participation from over 232 paddlers (144 Men and 88 Women) from all over the island during the two-day event. President TTASL Rahal Abeyratne and other senior officials graced the occasion.
