The English Activity Day of Princess of Wales’ College, Moratuwa was conducted last week with the participation of teachers, parents of children and well-wishers. Motivational Speaker Mandapa Pandithage was the Chief Guest.
The three-hour event began around 9.00 a.m. with the lightning of the traditional oil lamp. A group of school girls sang the school anthem.
During the event students displayed their talents by conducting various items such as English spelling contest, announcing Rupavahini news, the musical chair competition, a stage drama and singing and dancing events.
The event was organised by the school English teacher Dhammika Owitigala and staff member Sithara Perera. Chief Guest Pandithage highlighted the importance of conducting the English Day Activity event and said such programmes encourage children to improve their English Language skills and also to display their talents from their younger days.
He also made a motivation speech for the benefit of a large number of children attended.
Principal Thilini Wijeweera impressed with the performances of children said they should learn subjects not only from sitting, reading and listening in the class room but also through fun activities.
The Principal also thanked teachers who encouraged students to make the English Activity Day a success.
English teacher Dhammika Owitigala said English is a global language and she wanted to conduct the English
Activity Day for the benefit of students with the sole intention of improving their English Language and activity skills.
She said during the past three weeks she worked hard to create a positive mindset and genuine interest of children to learn English through fun activities.
“During that period I spent time with children not as a teacher but as a friend and a mother,” she said.
She also said she was happy to see the participant children who once doubted their English skills confidently showed their inborn talents by dancing, singing and speaking on the stage.
