Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that the country should have an open economy and he has propagated this concept every time he came to power.

The former President also said if the current rulers do not follow the path he has set, it will be difficult to navigate the country’s economy.

He was speaking at the final rally of the New Democratic Front (NDF) to support the candidates contesting Thursday’s Parliamentary Election under the party symbol – the Gas Cylinder – in Maradana, Colombo, yesterday. Wickremesinghe went on to say that his government had been able to rescue the country from the economic crisis and stopped all the queues to purchase essential goods.

“We negotiated with the IMF and managed all the loans. By 2028 we should start paying off the debt. There is time until 2042. If the loans are not paid, we will have to go back to the era of queues,” he said.

Wickremesinghe said the current President still has not outlined his economic roadmap.

He also stressed that the Government should make a clear statement on their plans with regard to the IMF programme. The NPP government should also unveil its tax policy.

He urged voters to elect experienced legislators at the upcoming elections to take the country on the correct path.

Wickremesinghe emphasised that the NDF has put forward an experienced and capable team to contest the Parliamentary Election.
