Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has condemned the alleged assault on Buddhist monks protesting at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, accusing the government of using force against monks engaged in religious chanting.

However, Sri Lanka Police have denied the allegations, stating that Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero slipped and fell on a concrete step during a confrontation with officers and was not assaulted.

Premadasa also accused authorities of obstructing sanitation facilities and removing temporary shelters used by the monks.

He urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to ensure the safety of the monks and prevent any threat to religious harmony.

The Opposition Leader also thanked the Dawatagaha Mosque administration for providing sanitation facilities to the protesting monks, describing the gesture as an example of religious coexistence. (Newswire)
