Ballot boxes were transported to polling stations yesterday with Police security in preparation for today’s Parliamentary Election in the Digamadulla electoral district, from Hardy Technical College, Ampara.
Seven thousand government and police officers will be on election duty at the 528 polling stations and the 68 counting centres, Ampara district Assistant Elections Commissioner Kasun Srinath Attanayaka said.
A total of 528 polling booths have been set up throughout the district: Ampara –184, Sammanthuurai – 93, Kalmunai –74 and Pottuvil –177.
Attanayaka said that 640 candidates from 21 registered political parties and 43 independent groups are contesting in the Digamadullah district. Seven members are to be elected to Parliament from the district.
A total of 555,432 voters have qualified to cast their votes in the district.
Voters in the Ampara, Sammanthurai, Kalmunai and Pottuvil electorates are entitled to votes at the election. The number of voters in the Ampara electorate is 188,222, Sammanthurai electorate – 99,727, Kalmunai electorate – 82,830 and Pottuvil electorate – 184,653.
Meanwhile, large crowds were seen in Ampara town yesterday as people waited for buses to return to their hometowns and villages to cast their vote.
