Social media’s commemoration pics of the North are past overseas events -Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala
Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala, stated in Parliament yesterday (4) that social media claims of commemorative events held in the North are based on photographs from past events in other countries. He added that a bankrupt political faction is using them to promote LTTE propaganda.
The Minister revealed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with this propaganda effort, two of whom are affiliated with the political Party represented by the “gas cylinder” symbol. Among them is an individual from Boralesgamuw, who had contested the General Elections under the same symbol.
Minister Wijepala emphasised the Government’s respect for every citizen’s right to honour their deceased relatives, but warned against promoting LTTE symbols or images. He clarified that videos claiming to show events in the North and East were, in fact, from outside Sri Lanka.
In related developments, a suspect from Baddegama was arrested on November 29 and has been remanded until December 17. Another individual from Maradana, accused of misleading the public by sharing foreign images, as those from Jaffna, was arrested, but has since been released on bail. He tòo represents the same political line.
The Minister accused these individuals of attempting to destabilise the Government by fostering tensions between the North and South.
