“Indian credit card purchases” claim: Nalinda sends letter of demand to SJB member

Health and Mass Media Minister and Chief Government Whip in Parliament, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, has issued a letter of demand seeking Rs. 1 billion in damages from former Western Provincial Council member Ajanta Niroshan Padukka over what he describes as false and defamatory statements.
The letter of demand has been sent through Attorney-at-Law Sampath Yalevaththa and relates to remarks made by Niroshan Padukka during a media briefing held on or around February 1, 2026.
At the media briefing, Niroshan Padukka alleged that Minister Jayatissa had used a credit card belonging to the owner of a blacklisted pharmaceutical company and had spent approximately Rs. 1 million on purchases in India. He further claimed that the minister should immediately disclose details of the alleged transaction and resign from his position.
Minister Jayatissa, through his legal representatives, has categorically denied the allegations, describing them as entirely false, baseless, and malicious.
According to the letter of demand, the minister has never used such a credit card at any time and the allegations were deliberately fabricated with the intention of portraying him as corrupt and unfit to hold the office of Health Minister.
The letter further states that the statements have caused serious damage to the minister’s reputation, particularly given his long political career marked by integrity and an unblemished public image.
The letter demands that Rs. 1 billion be paid as compensation for the damage caused, within 14 days from February 2, 2026.
It also warns that failure to settle the amount within the stipulated period will result in legal action being initiated to recover the sum along with legal interest and court costs. (Newswire)
