William Ruto: From chicken seller to Kenya's President-Elect
ENYA: William Ruto – who has been declared the winner of Kenya’s heavily disputed Presidential election – had a childhood that epitomises the lives of many poor Kenyans.
He went to primary school barefoot, wearing his first pair of shoes at the age of 15. He also sold chicken and groundnuts by the roadside in rural areas of the Rift Valley.
So it came as no surprise that he portrayed himself as the champion of the poor as he vied for the presidency in the 9 August election. Meanwhile, Raila Odinga has rejected the results of Kenya’s Presidential election saying that the figures announced on Monday were “null and void”. According to the official results, Odinga narrowly lost to Deputy President William Ruto. Odinga accused the head of the electoral body of a “blatant disregard of the Constitution”.
Chairman of the Electoral Body Wafula Chebukati said Odinga received 48.8% of the vote in last Tuesday’s election compared to Ruto’s 50.5%.
