The 77th National Independence Day celebrations took place with pride and grandeur at Independence Square in Colombo, under the theme ‘Let’s join the national renaissance’, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Government took steps to conduct this year’s Independence Day celebrations in a modest manner, avoiding unnecessary expenses compared to previous years. As a result, the participation of the Armed Forces was reduced by about 40 percent.
The festivities commenced with the President’s arrival, following a parade of three motorcycles led by Major Asitha Ratnayake. The Commanders of the three Armed Forces and the Acting Inspector General of Police escorted President Dissanayake to the main flagpole, where he hoisted the national flag amidst traditional drumming by the State Dance Troupe of the Cultural Affairs Department.
The national anthem was sung by 49 students of nine leading schools in Colombo with the participation of everyone present, following the flag-hoisting ceremony. Additionally, 16 schoolgirls from Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Vishaka Vidyalaya, and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya sung the Jaya Mangala Gatha and the auspicious chant Devo Vassathu Kalena.
A poignant two minutes’ silence was observed in honour of the Sri Lankans who had sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The ceremony continued with a vibrant Independence Day parade featuring the Tri-Forces, Police, Civil Defence Force, and National Cadet Corps, showcasing Sri Lanka’s might and sovereignty. The parade highlighted the capability of the nation, featuring personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Civil Security Department, and the National Cadet Corps.
The parade also included combat vehicles with retired officers and disabled soldiers participating. The cultural parade added musical splendour to the event. The celebration concluded after the national anthem was sung in Tamil. The ceremony was attended by the Maha Sanghaand other religious leaders, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, Chief Justice Murdu Fernando, Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Provincial Governors, Members of Parliament, Ambassadors and High Commissioners and Veddah Chief Uruwarige Wannilaaththo as well as government officials and war heroes.
