A new model of school to be started by Yashodara Pathanjali

Yasodara Pathanjali who was born in the United Kingdom and returned to Sri Lanka after living there for 30 years. She was a state emplyee in UK. She left UK and came to Sri Lanka. She is a teacher, artist, author, and career counselor. She is trying to start ‘Sri Lanka’s first alternative school’ which will bring about a change in the education system in Sri Lanka.

As she told the BBC, she believes that education at home is more important than formal education at school. Yasodara came to Sri Lanka in 2018 and worked to educate parents about providing education to their children without sending them to school. According to her, there is a clear difference between traditional and alternative education methods.

She further mentioned that the Independent Collective School to be started by on January 04, 2024 are also based on projects. She calls the school the first formal democratic and progressive school in Sri Lanka. This school is not only provide extracurricular activities, sports but also activities aimed at professional skills for the children. A unique thing here is that there is no formal uniform prescribed.

However, Yashodara’s belief is that this school system is responsible for the development of the attitudes, skills and knowledge of the Sri Lankan children as well as creating a generation of rational and intelligent students with self-esteem.
