Chief Government Whip Minister Prasanna Ranatunga denied the Opposition’s allegation that President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s recent letter to the Speaker concerning its
proceedings is an act of finding faults with the legislature. Minister Ranatunga said the President has only requested to quicken the process of establishing the Sectoral Oversight Committees.
Several Opposition MPs pointed out that the President, by sending such a letter was trying to intimidate the House. Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella raised the issue. Kiriella noted that the President has no right to find fault with the legislature. It’s a matter of the government failing to produce necessary documents, he added. “We have been asking for finalised documents with the IMF but we haven’t received them as of yet,” he noted.
