A strong Alliance essential to address present crisis – Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva
Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Chairman and Ports and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva on Saturday (29) said that the New Alliance (NA) led by the SLFP, believes that a strong Alliance is necessary for the country to overcome the current economic and political crisis.
“The world does not accept extremist leftist politics today. The identity of Sri Lanka cannot be established in global politics with extremist politics. There should be a strong economic and political order for that,” he said.
The Minister was addressing the second rally of the series of public rallies held by the NA, led by the SLFP, in Wellawaya town on Saturday (29) afternoon.
He believes that most of the citizens in the country look beyond narrow political and personal objectives which is why there is a growing eagerness for people to join the NA.
“At a time when every Party in this country was divided into two or three, the NA led by the SLFP has presented a new idea of political unity today. We want the country to win through this unity”, he said.
He said that the NA was formed with an objective of providing leadership to ensure that the country is recovers from the present economic quagmire.
“Without an agreed upon economic and political programme, the country will not be able to make a recovery. The aim of the NA, led by the SLFP, is to offer guidance towards this goal”, he said.
The Minister thanked State Minister Jagath Pushpakumara for organising this rally to show the people’s strength around the NA.
Speaking on the occasion, State Minister Jagath Pushpakumara said that the NA is holding a series of rallies to show its strength.
“I am informed that more than 35,000 people have attended this rally. This kind of population has never participated in this kind of political rally in the Moneragala District before”, he said
He added that many Parties held political rallies in the Moneragala District by bringing people from outstations.
“Today my political career completes 30 years and the people in the Moneragala District have given me a gift by attending this rally to strengthen the NA led by the SLFP”, he said.
He added that the people in the district have placed unwavering confidence in him.
MP and Former Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that the SLFP is the driving force that made the country victorious.
He is of the view that the NA led by the SLFP will create a better country for posterity. “The people lost their confidence in political Parties due to the policies adopted by certain politicians. Today, we have to travel a long way within a short span of time”, he said.
The former Media Minister said that many stalwarts in the Moneragala District are with the NA. He expressed hope that former MP Vijith Vijithamuni De Soyza will also join them in due course.
State Minister Chamara Sampath Dasanayake expressing his views, said, “The people in Wellawaya will take the right decision at the next presidential election. He said that the people have realised that the NA led by the SLFP, will ensure brighter future for the country.”
Agriculture and Plantation Industry Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that thousands of people are expected to participate in the public rallies organised by the NA led by the SLFP, in future.
He was of the view that the people have now realised the importance of having a strong and viable economic policy to drive the country out of the present economic quagmire.
The Minister said that he introduced Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva to the people at the last rally held in Ambalantota, as Acting Chairman of the SLFP. “However, he has become Chairman of the SLFP today, and MP Duminda Dissanayake has also become the General Secretary of the Party”, he said.
He added that the next public rally of the NA will be held in Badulla on the July 14. “The meeting is organised by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and State Minister Chamara Sampath Dasanayake”, he said.
He said that the SLFP cannot be fragmented into pieces and nobody will be allowed to create splits within the Party.
Minister Amaraweera said that the former SLFP President should take full responsibility for creating divisions within the Party.
“We informed him of the importance of having negotiations with the alliance formed by MP Nimal Lanza. But our former SLFP President didn’t want to do it”, he said.
The Minister added that the NA has become the decisive force in the next presidential election.
“The next President is the presidential candidate we support. The next President will be appointed by this NA,” he said.
