Abhisheka shatters Tharushi’s record at School Games

In a notable feat, MGT Abhisheka of Wickramabahu National School in the Central Province broke the Under-16 girls’ 800m Meet Record set by current Asian Games 800m gold medalist Tharushi Karunaratne on the fourth day of the All-island Schools Games held at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Thursday.

Abhisheka completed the race in an impressive time of 2 minutes and 12.74 seconds, erasing the

previous record of 2 minutes and 14.27 seconds, held by Tharushi Karunaratne of A Ratnayake Central College Walala since 2019.

Ayomal Akalanka, a silver medalist in the Commonwealth Youth Games for the 400m Hurdles, set a new Meet Record in the Under-18 400m Hurdles by clocking 52.22 seconds during the heats. This achievement erased his own previous record of 53.12 seconds set last year. Akalanka, who achieved a personal best of 51.61 seconds at the Commonwealth Youth Games in August this year, is looking forward to the finals scheduled for today.

HDS Avishka from Dammissara National College achieved a new meet record in the Under-16 Boys 800m, finishing with a time of 1 minute and 59.19 seconds. This performance erased the previous record of 2 minutes and 00.68 seconds set by PS Kumara of A Ratnayake Central College Walala in 2018.

Tharusha Dinushan Mendis from Lyceum International School Wattala set a new meet record in the Under-16 boys’ high jump by clearing a height of 1.95 meters, surpassing the previous record of 1.94 meters set by Vinsarin Tennakoon of Dharmapala Vidyalaya Pannipitiya in 2019.

KYM Yasiru from Kahawatta Central College made history by establishing a new meet record in the Boys Under-20 Triple Jump, achieving a distance of 15.93 meters. This accomplishment erased the previous record of 15.57 meters set by AK Korala of Yoshida International School Sapugaskanda last year.

With these remarkable performances, a total of 19 meet records have been shattered by the fourth day of the five-day championships, which conclude today.
