Former National champion Chandrika de Silva once again came to the fore when she clinched over 45 women’s singles title at the Badminton Asia Senior Open held at the Tien Son Sports Complex in Danang, Vietnam over the weekend.
Chandrika de Silva from Seylan Bank defeated India’s Yasmeen Shaikh with a convincing score of 21-7, 21-9 in the final, securing the gold medal more comfortably. In addition Lakshmi Punchihewa who is the Assistant Secretary of SLB displayed fine performances in the Over 65 women’s singles category, securing the bronze medal in a hard-fought competition.
In the Over 80 and Over 110 combined age women’s doubles, the formidable duo of Chandrika and Lakshmi once again stole the show clinching the bronze medal.
At the mixed doubles Rohan De Silva the President of the SLB and Chandrika claimed the gold medal in the combined age category. This was Chandrika’s third achievement as she bagged two gold medals and a bronze at this tournament.
Manjula Fernando exhibited outstanding performances in the Over 45 men’s singles category, earning the silver medal. Fernando the former National shuttler displayed a good show during the tournament but ultimately lost to Indonesia’s top seed, Jhonu Hidayat, in a closely contested final.
The tournament was organized by the Badminton Asia Confederation while most of the former National shuttlers were present at this event.
