A Police team from the Special Investigation Unit was dispatched yesterday (19) to the Narammala area to probe the police shooting in which a civilian was killed in Narammala on Thursday night. A team has been sent to investigate the matter on the instructions of Acting Inspector General Deshabandu Tennakoon. The attention of the Police Headquarters has also been focused on providing necessary relief to the family of the deceased driver on behalf of the Sri Lanka Police.

A man was killed in Narammala on Thursday (18) around 6.30 pm in the evening after a police pursuit ended in a fatal encounter. According to initial reports, the incident occurred in the Dampelessa area when a lorry driver allegedly failed to stop at a police checkpoint. Police officers gave chase and after stopping the lorry, an accidental discharge of a firearm by one of the police officers resulted in the driver’s death.

The deceased has been identified as a father of three and a resident of Narammala.

A tense situation occurred in the Dampelessa area in Narammala following the shooting incident.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the victim had been shot as he had failed to heed Police instructions to stop for an inspection.

A Sub Inspector has been arrested in connection to the shooting incident by the authorities.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the arrested Police Officer is a 59-year-old attached to the Narammala Police.

He said that internal investigations have found that the Police Officer in question had acted in violation of the regulations and practices of the Police Force.

SSP Thalduwa said that the officer had attempted to inspect the vehicle in civil attire and that he has also been found to have chased after the vehicle and fired the weapon point blank.

An eyewitness has claimed that the driver of the lorry was reported dead after being shot by the Police in Narammala yesterday, had been shot by the SI in civilian attire.

An eyewitness told the media that two individuals in civil attire travelling on a motorcycle had chased after the lorry.

Following the shooting, the victim was taken in a Police three-wheeler to the hospital, the witness claimed adding that the victim is a young person involved in carpentry.

A comprehensive investigation is now underway to determine the precise circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

The attention of the Police Headquarters has also been focused on providing relief to the family of the deceased driver on behalf of the Sri Lanka Police.
