Actor duplicating Bandu as Bindu, four others acquitted

The Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday acquitted five persons including actor Janaka Kumara Botalegama alias Bindu who is alleged to have duplicated the performances of veteran film actor Bandu Samarasinghe, from a case filed against him under the Intellectual Property Act.

Announcing the verdict, the magistrate said that the accused were acquitted on the grounds that there was not enough evidence to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt regarding the allegations raised in accordance with the Intellectual Property Act.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) filed charges against the accused following a complaint by actor Bandu Samarasinghe.

The case was heard before the court for eight years, and after hearing the evidence, the court decided to release the accused.

The five accused included actor Botalegama, Sri Mal Weerasinghe, Kelum Udayakumara, Chaminda Kumara Ranasinghe and Udaya Warnakulasuriya, who prepared and distributed the film.
