ADB, UDA to invest Rs. 1 Bn to create Sigiriya/Dambulla and Trincomalee tourism zones

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank will invest over Rs. one billion to develop Sigiriya/Dambulla and Trincomalee as tourism zones.

Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that this project was stalled due to the C-19 pandemic and the economic crisis that followed. “We will commence this project this year and initially invest Rs. 320 million this year.Under this project locations identified in Sigiriya/Dambulla and Trincomalee cities would be converted as tourism zones and infrastructure would be provided to them.”

In addition to providing infrastructure historic places of interest too would be preserved and developed. “New car parks would be set up and these initiatives will help to generate more income to tourism stakeholders especially in these areas. We have already spoken with regional provincial councils and related line ministries and have sought their ideas for this project.”

The Trincomalee project consists of 6 sub-projects and includes the development of . Dutch Bay (Dutch Bay) and Back Bay Beach Development, Fort Frederick, Preservation and improvement, public facilities of hot springs development, construction of floating restaurants and creating eco-parks.

Improvement of Powder Island and Crow Island Areas modernisation of Colonial Building including Trincomalee Port Head Office Premises are also included for this development.
