Adverse weather takes 26 lives, 41 injured

The death toll from the adverse weather experienced in many parts of the country has risen to 26, Defence State Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon told Parliament yesterday.

He said this while making a special statement on the current situation in Parliament yesterday.

Meanwhile, 41 persons have been injured due to various incidents caused by the extreme weather, he said.

Additionally, he revealed that a total of 130,021 persons from 33,422 families within 262 Divisional Secretariat divisions of 23 districts across the country have been affected by the prevailing disaster situation.

He stated that 9,248 people belonging to 2,368 families have been moved to 116 regional relief centres established across the country.

Responding to questions raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa about increasing allocated funds for meals for displaced persons, the State Minister confirmed that the government has already obtained necessary approvals for this measure.
