Advisory for heavy rains issued to some provinces of Sri Lanka
The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for heavy rain in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Southern provinces today (24), effective until 07.00 am tomorrow.
Per the advisory, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Southern provinces, with heavy falls above 100 mm likely at some places in these areas.
Red alerts have been issued for 13 districts and amber alerts for 12 districts.
A few showers will occur in the North-central province and in the Mannar district.
Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the Central hills, North-central and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale Districts.
The department also states that the Deep Depression over the West-central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards and is currently crossing the North Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts of India.
Although this system will not have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, the prevailing rainy conditions in the southwestern part of the island are expected to continue due to the wind flow towards the system.
The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, the Deep Depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is currently located around 1,020 km northeast of Kankasanthurai. The system is very likely to move further west-northwestwards and is currently crossing the North Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts of India.
Under the influence of this system, heavy thundershowers are expected over the sea areas of the Bay of Bengal, with winds occasionally increasing up to 70-80 kmph, and the sea conditions in these areas will become very rough.
Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the sea areas in between 7°N and 22°N latitude and 82°E and 90°E longitude until further notice. Naval and fishing communities operating in those sea areas are advised to move away from the affected sea areas.
Naval and fishing communities engaging the activities over these sea areas are advised to be vigilant and be attentive to the future forecasts and bulletins issued by the department of meteorology in this regard.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas during the evening or night.
Winds will be South-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 55-65 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and Puttalam, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and Puttalam, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough or very rough at times. The naval and fishing communities who are engaged in fishing and naval activities in the above sea areas are requested to be vigilant in this regard.
The other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough at times. The wave height may increase about 2.0 – 2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara.
