Airline passenger arrested after weapon found in his luggage

Katunayake airport security officers on Sunday arrested a passenger bound for Israel carrying a weapon similar to a revolver used for sporting activities.

The Police say that a weapon was found by airport security officers while checking the passenger’s luggage. During questioning, the passenger had told Police that the weapon had been at his Gampola house for a long time and he was taking it as it was only used for sporting activities.

Investigations have revealed that the passenger was in Government Service and is currently working in Israel after obtaining leave.

He had been working in Israel for about four years and was going back to Israel after spending a month’s holiday here.

Police said that after presenting the passenger along with the weapon before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (20), steps were taken to release him on a surety bail of Rs.500,000.

Court has also given an order to the Police to present this weapon to the Government Analyst and submit a report.
