Akila Dananjaya, the experienced off-spinner, and Leg spinner Jeffrey Vandersay have once again been recalled to the Sri Lanka 20-member One Day squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe series. The squad is awaiting approval from the Sports Minister.
The new Section Committee headed by Upul Tharanga has conducted its first selection, optimistic about receiving approval. Akila Dananjaya the experienced off-spinner from Colts CC, not included in the recent National squad, has earned his place based on his current performance.
After being cleared from suspension by the ICC who was suspended for his bowling action, Akila has now returned to domestic cricket, showcasing excellent form as the third-highest wicket-taker in the ongoing Major Club Limited Overs Tourney.
Vandersay transitioning from Tamil Union to Bloomfield has been recalled for his consistent performance while young leggie Praveena Jayawickrama who struggled to perform well, did not make it into the team.
Meanwhile, opener Avishka Fernando, Nuwanidu Fernando and key leggie Wanindu Hasaranga are integral members of the squad. Following his recovery from injury, Hasaranga is expected to play this Zimbabwe series.
Paceman Chamika Gunasekara who previously had played only One Day match, sustained an injury but once again got a chance to enter the squad. Asitha Fernando the paceman who was in the Test squad earlier, was recalled for the ODI. He performed well in English county cricket recently. Promod Madushan who served as a travel reserve in the World Cup is in the squad as well. Janith Liyanage, an in-form batter and all-rounder from Colts CC, who played only international T-20 matches, is also included.
The selection committee has named the T20 player squad, pending approval from the Minister. Notably, several players from the ODI squad have also been selected for the T20 squad. The T20 squad features two unconventional pacemen, Nuwan Thushara and Matheesha Pathirana.
