Education Minister Susil Premajayantha has issued instructions to relevant authorities to conduct academic activities at schools unhindered despite a strike by non-academic staff.

The Minister has ordered to carry out the educational activities at schools as usual and to prepare a formal programme to manage the activities at the schools with the involvement of academic staff and other stakeholders.

As per the Education Ministry notification, all provincial education secretaries and all provincial education directors are duty bound to take necessary moves to ensure the smooth functioning of schools.

Non-academic staff in schools have embarked on trade union action to report sick yesterday (24) and today (25) over several demands including rectifying salary anomalies.

According to the non-academic staff collective of schools, the collective has decided to launch this token strike aiming to rectify several issues. Sources said that the non-academic staff members will report for duty from tomorrow as usual.

The Education Ministry noted that many solutions have been provided to the issues of non-academic staff of schools in the past two years and therefore engaging in trade union action at this juncture is purely a political approach.

According to Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha, the non-academic staff are divided into two categories. Therefore, the process of formulating a national policy for these two cadres cannot be done immediately and it will take time.

Accordingly, engaging in trade union action in such a setting is a purely political approach. Besides, the normal academic functioning of schools cannot be allowed to be disrupted by trade union action of the school non-academic staff. Provincial education authorities and all the principals have been informed in this regard to ensure smooth functioning of schools. The school community has also been informed in this regard, the Minister added.
