The Minister further said that 917,143 people belonging to 274,120 displaced families have already been resettled in those provinces, while 4,999 people belonging to 1,701 families remain to be resettled.

Minister Ranatunga said this at the foundation stone-laying for the second phase of Erukkalampetti ‘Kuwait Zakath’ housing village in Mannar. The housing village consists of 125 houses and is being built with financial assistance from ‘Kuwait Zakath House’, at Rs.1.8 million per house.

The first phase consisting of 75 houses, built at a cost of Rs. 105 million, was opened earlier.

There are 20,276 people displaced by the war, in the NP and EP, in need of housing.

Furthermore, 9,683 persons belonging to 3,828 families, who migrated to India as refugees during the war, have now returned to their homeland. These families will also be given houses under the Government’s programme to provide houses to the displaced people.

The organization and coordination of all activities required to resettle the people of the NP and EP, who were displaced by the war, is carried out by the Resettlement Division of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing.
