Ananda College clinched the P. de S. Kularatne Memorial Shield when they defeated traditional rivals Nalanda College 26-5 in the annual Inter-Schools Under-19 rugby encounter played at the Ananda Rugby Grounds in Rajagiriya.
This game had a great amount of significance as this was the very first encounter to be played at this venue, which has been newly constructed for Ananda rugby matches.
The Anandians, who came in as the clear favourites dominated the proceedings from the kick-off and collected their points from three goals and one try and conceded just a solitary try to their opponents.
Winger Kalindu Kaveesha excelled with two superb tries for the Anandians while Rehan Attanayake and Nisal Costa scored one try each with Dinesh Chamuditha adding the extra points to three tries.
In fact, Ananda have just concluded the league phase of this year’s tournament while competing in the Division One Segment ‘B’ alongside Thurstan College, Maliyadeva College, Lumbini College, St. Aloysius’ College and Piliyandala Central.
In contrast, Nalanda are vying for honours in the Division One Segment ‘C’ Tournament together with Devapathiraja College, Sumangala College, Panadura, Siri Piyarathana College, Richmond College and Bandaranaike Central College.
This win will also give the Anandians a great confidence boost ahead of their 52nd annual fixture against Vidyartha College for the Sir. William Gopallawa Shield on Saturday at this same venue.
