‘Ananda Walk 2024’ on July 7

The ‘Ananda Walk 2024’ organised annually by the Ananda College Old Boys’ Association (ACOBA) will parade on July 7 under the theme ‘Educate and empower to serve mother Lanka’.

The Ananda Walk 2024 is a fundraising event organised annually by the ACOBA. The funds raised from the event will be utilised to support educational initiatives, sports development, students’ welfare and infrastructure development activities of Ananda College, Colombo, Executive President of the ACOBA Senior Prof. Athula Kaluarachchi said.

He was addressing the media on preparations of the ‘Ananda Walk 2024’ at Ananda College auditorium on Monday (10).

He added that the walk of this year also will be participated by past students, present students, teachers, parents and well-wishers amounting to more than 10,000 participants. This will be a memorable event for all participants with many exciting activities lined up aiming to reach the targets of the theme “Educate and empower to serve mother Lanka”.

“The main objective of the walk is to educate and empower Sri Lankan to love the country while being patriotic individuals. Brain-drain will automatically reduce with the increase of patriotic persons to love the mother country, nature and people,” Deputy President of ACOBA and Project Chair-Ananda Walk 2024 Samitha Senevirathna said.

The Ananda Walk 2024 will promote utility and social responsibility among its participants and will provide an opportunity for individuals to engage in a healthy activity while contributing to a noble cause. This is yet another effort by the ACOBA to demonstrate its commitment to improve education, sports and the well-being of the students of Ananda College whilst creating a positive impact on the society, Principal of Ananda College D. M. L. P. Dissanayake said.

The Ananda Walk will commence from the Ananda College premises on July 7 and reach the Open Air Theatre of Viharamahadevi Park passing Ward Place and Rosmead Place.

Then the official T-shirt and the cap of Ananda Walk 2924 were launched and the first T-shirt was presented to former captain of national cricket team Dinesh Chandimal by the ACOBA President and Principal of the college. This was followed by the launch of the official wristband called ‘Band of Hope’. The fist wristband was presented to General Kamal Gunaratne by the ACOBA President.

It was followed by the launch of “Sri Lanka’s Beacon of Hope”, the special iron frame of Sri Lanka.

Addressing the press briefing Emeritus Prof. J. B. Dissanayake said that walking is an event which enriches the health of people.

“Engaging in a walk has a long history as the Buddha also engaged in the walk called “Ruwan Sakmana” centuries ago. Walks pave the way for a healthy lifestyle balanced with physical and mental health,” Prof. Dissanayake said.

Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne said that the Ananda Walk 2024 will inform the people and policy-makers of the country to create a necessary environment to reduce the brain drain aiming to prevent the youth leaving the country.
