ANCL’s Silumina, Dinamina newspapers bag Journalism Awards for Excellence

The 24th edition of the annual Journalism Awards for Excellence was held at the Mount Lavinia Hotel yesterday.

The awards night is organised by the Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka in partnership with the Sri Lanka Press Institute and its affiliated unions, the Newspaper Society of Sri Lanka, Free Media Movement and the Sri Lanka Working Journalist’s Association.

The annual event is held to recognise professional excellence in journalism and award those who excel in it. This year, 36 journalists received the ‘Pen Trophy’ Award and 16 others received Certificates of Merit, along with five Lifetime Achievement Awardees: H. L. D. Mahindapala, Stanley Samarasinghe, Seetha Ranjanee, S. Thillainathan and A. L. M. Nilam.

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) won several and the Dinamina paper won the Best Designed Newspaper of the Year (Merit) award.

In addition, Subashini Jayaratne of Silumina newspaper won the award for the best environmental reporting of the year. The Subramaniam Chettiar Award for Best Social Event Reporting of the Year went to Tania Moses of Silumina Newspaper. The Scoop of the Year award was given to Tharaka Wickramasekara of the Silumina newspaper.

Best Sports Journalist of the Year was won by Fawz Mohammed of the Silumina Newspaper.

Vajira Liyanage of the Silumina newspaper also received the certificate of merit of the Upali Wijayawardena Award for the best feature article of the year.

Wijeya Newspapers Chairman and Newspaper Society of Sri Lanka President Ranjith Wijeyawardena was the Chief Guest of this award ceremony.

Director General of Government Information Dinith Chinthaka Karunaratne, ANCL Chairman Prof.Harendra Kariyawasam, Journalism Awards for Excellence Convener Sukumar Rockwood, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Editors’ Guild and Director of Wijeya Newspapers Siri Ranasinghe, ANCL Editorial Director Sisira Paranatantrie and prominent media personalities and journalists attended.

The main sponsors of the event are John Keells Holdings, Aitken Spence, Dialog Axiata, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Bank of Ceylon, People’s Bank and Olu Water. The Mount Lavinia Hotel is the host-hotel.
