Annual Katina Pinkama of Lankaramaya held on Nov. 10

The Annual Katina Pinkama of the historic Lankaramaya, which is one of the holy sites of the Atamastana (Eight Sacred Buddhist temples) in Anuradhapura, was held early this week with the participation of 25 Venerable Theras, including the Chief Incumbents of the temples, villagers, and a large number of Buddhists in the country.

The Katina Pinkama ceremony was sponsored by Wasanthi Pothupitiya, a teacher of English in Gampaha town, her husband Kumara Pothupitiya and their children Sajith and Javana. Parallel to the Katina Pinkama, Pirith chanting was organized in the premises of the Ruwanweli Seya and alms were offered to 25 Buddhist Monks and all participants at the ceremony.

Wasanthi Pothupitiya was instrumental in constructing the Sambuddha Mandhiraya (Shrine Room) at the Lankaramaya and enshrining the relics of Lord Buddha and Venerable Arahanths in the Shrine Room as well.

The foundation of the Shrine Room was laid in 2017 by Ayurvedic physician P. Weerasinghe and thereafter the construction was undertaken up to the roof level of the Shrine Room, funded by Wasanthi Pothupitiya, her family members, parents of her students and other contributors. Thereafter, the construction was completed with government funds under the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry in June 2019.

The sacred relics of the Lord Buddha, Arahanth Sariyuth Thera, Arahanth Mugalan Thera, Arahanth Seevali Thera, and Arahanth Ananda Thera were enshrined at the Buddha statue, and Arahanth Sariyuth and Arahanth Mugalan statues of the Sambuddha Mandira in 2021.

Later it was opened for the veneration by the Buddhists the world over and subsequently another casket of relics of the Lord Buddha and relics of five Great Arahanths (Paswaga Mahanun) were offered to the Sambuddha Mandira (shrine room) in 2023.

Ralapanawe Dhammajothi Thera, Anuradhapura Rathnamali Chaithyaram Adhikari Uthru Madyama Disawe Pradhana Sanganayaka Ven. Eethal Watunawawe Gnanathilaka Thera, Abayagiri Viharadhikari Ven. Pallanchiye Rathanasiri Thera, Thuparamadhikari Ven. Kahalle Ganinda Thera, Mirisawati Viharamadhikari Ven. Wawhene Sobitha Thera, Jethawanarama Viharadhikari Ven. Halmillawe Rathanapala Thera, Chief Incumbent of Anuradhapura Sri Sambuddhajayanthi Viharaya Ven. Nugethanne Prannananda Thera and 18 other Theras participated in the Katina Pinkama on November 10.
