Another stock of Sputnik V vaccines arrives

Another stock of the Russian COVID-19 Sputnik V vaccine arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake yesterday morning, State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana confirmed.

The vaccine consignment consists of 15,000 doses of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Moscow-based Gamaleya Research Institute.

According to the State Minister, these vaccine doses will be given to those who have been given the first dose of Sputnik V. As per the statistics of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, 159,081 people have been vaccinated with the Sputnik V vaccine as the first dose and only 14,516 doses have been administered as the second dose so far.

The health authorities said that there is no delay in administering the second dose. Unlike other vaccines, Sputnik has separate first and second doses with different formulations.

This is the fourth vaccine consignment delivered by the Russian Government, in keeping with a purchase order placed by the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC).

The Government has ordered 1.3 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine and the first batch of 15,000 doses arrived in Sri Lanka on May 4. The second batch of 50,000 doses arrived on May 27 and the third batch arrived on June 11.
