Executive Director of the election monitoring group PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi yesterday said that the new President and Prime Minister should be appointed by a collective agreement by all parties in Parliament without going for a vote.

Issuing a statement, he said that there are public representatives who have not yet understood the economic, political and social instability in which Sri Lanka is at the moment.

He said politicians kept behaving irresponsibly and this will hamper solutions taken for the future wellbeing of the country.

“If we all do not work together at this moment, no one will be able to prevent you, the politicians, and us, the citizens, from being drawn towards destruction. Whoever gets control of the state in the future will have to make unpopular decisions and even though we citizens are not directly responsible for this disaster, the citizens will also have to make great sacrifices. Therefore, we request all of you party leaders and Members of Parliament to come to a consensus in electing leaders as well as for future decision-making at the national level,” he said.
