Army Commander invites spouses of two great war veterans to his office

Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage recently invited Mrs. Lali Kobbekaduwa and Mrs. Manel Wimalaratne, spouses of two great war veterans, late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa and late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, who have garnered immortal respect of the nation as war veterans of the highest calibre, gallantry and patriotism, to his office at the Army Headquarters.

The Army Commander together with Mrs. Janaki Liyange, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit, extended a warm reception to both ladies on arrival and interacted with them inquiring about their well-being, while recalling cherished memories of their husbands.

The Army Chief’s own initiative symbolized the high degree of recognition and respect he attaches to the treasured memories of the Gajaba Regiment’s founding father, late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne who was the driving force behind the success of the GR as an infantry unit. The cordial meeting also served as a tribute to the legendary war hero, late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa whose military leadership remains hitherto unparalleled.

Afterwards, both spouses were invited to the Commander’s conference room to distribute Juki machines and school stationery among deserving families of soldiers, selected by the Army Seva Vanitha Unit. On the same occasion, two video documentaries of both late war veterans were screened. Before their departure, they were hosted to lunch by Lieutenant General Liyanage and Mrs. Liyanage.

Major General S.W.M Fernando, Military Secretary, Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena, Quarter Master General and senior members of the Army Seva Vanitha unit were also associated with the day’s event.
