Hasalaka Police arrested an Army sergeant, aged 38, on Monday (23) for threatening to kill his wife and seven-year-old child, while wielding a knife, and taking them forcibly to several locations both by bus and on foot.

This Army sergeant has been residing with his wife and child in the Lenadora area of Dambulla.

An officer of the Hasalaka Police said that the suspect had forcibly taken his family away from their house in Dambulla on Sunday (22).

First, he had taken his wife and child from Dambulla to Kandy. Then he had taken them to several places on foot and then brought them to Hasalaka by bus from Kandy on Monday (23).

After the sergeant’s wife told an officer of the Hasalaka Police about this, this Army sergeant was arrested and his wife and the child were freed from his grasp. The knife he had used to threaten his family was also seized.

The Police say that they had travelled over 100 kilometres by that time.

It has been revealed that this soldier, who is attached to an Army camp in Nuwara Eliya, received treatment for a mental illness.

The Police also said that it appears that he has reached this condition due to not receiving proper treatment recently.

The Police said that they will present this sergeant to the Mahiyanganaya court and request that he be referred to a mental hospital for treatment.
