Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra will undertake an official visit to Qatar from Sept. 20 to 23, leading the Sri Lankan delegation to the Sri Lanka-Qatar Joint Committee Meeting on labour and foreign employment cooperation.

The Joint Committee is scheduled to meet after more than five years, with discussions expected to focus on employment opportunities, safe and transparent recruitment, worker welfare and protection, skills development and institutional coordination between the two countries.

The previous Joint Committee meeting was held virtually in June 2021, while the last in-person meeting took place in Colombo in December 2019.

During the visit, Hemachandra is scheduled to meet Qatar’s Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour, Sheikha Najwa bint Abdulrahman Al Thani, for discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation in labour and foreign employment.

He is also scheduled to meet members and representatives of the Sri Lankan community in Qatar to discuss matters affecting Sri Lankans living and working there.

Hemachandra said the visit would provide an opportunity to further strengthen Sri Lanka-Qatar cooperation, expand employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers and address matters concerning their welfare and protection. (Newswire)
