Ashen, Dinara clinch major titles at Tennis Nationals
Ashen Silva and Dinara de Silva took major honours at the 108th National Tennis Championships, which concluded at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.
Ashen, lived upto expectations as the top seed and came from behind with a fine performance to beat the third seed Chathurya Nilaweera in the Men’s Singles final after a thrilling four-setter.
Even then, Ashen had a disappointing start as he dropped the opening set and came under tremendous pressure before claiming the remaining three sets 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 after a marathon encounter. Meanwhile, Dinara continued her giant-killing act and delivered another stunning blow by overcoming the fifth seed Anjalika Kurera in the Women’s Singles final.
The 15-year-old schoolgirl from St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo started the tournament as the eighth seed and went on to clinch the biggest prize in the local tennis scene with a straight set victory. Overall, this has been a memorable tournament for Dinara as she completed a grand triple crown having earlier won the Girls’ Under-16 and Under-18 titles respectively.
Results: (Men’s Singles final): Ashen Silva beat Chathurya Nilaweera 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. (Women’s Singles final): Dinara de Silva beat Anjalika Kurera 6-2, 6-4. (Women’s Doubles final): Dinethya Dharmaratne and Rukshika Wijesooriya beat Dinara de Silva and Saajida Razick 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
